Village Pond Clearance Day

The problem
A short while ago, all the village pond fish had to be saved
(see The Great Fish Rescue).
The basic problem was that there was far too much vegetation in the pond – as you can see from Stella's efforts – which meant that the water level got dangerously low for any wildlife living in it even when it was wet.
Wednesday 9th September started cold and grey, but turned into a beautiful sunny late summer day. With the help of a group of Vale Countryside Volunteers and some hardy villagers, the pond was cleared of many of the bullrushes that have so choked the pond over the last year or two.
It was a hard day's day, and Alison Finnemore and Janet Gowin's tea breaks at the Chapel were very welcome. Thanks to them, and to all the villagers who put their back into it.
And many thanks to the Vale Countryside Volunteers – a lovely bunch of people who once a week go round the Vale to give their time and practical help on environmental projects. You can find out more about them on their website.
