The runners-up

To keep the suspense going, I'll first identify my two runners-up. Luck is a big factor in taking a photograph on an allotted day, and Samantha got a stinker. Despite this, she put together this evocative composition.

My other runner-up is Cynthia's essential picture of St Marys radiant in a pool of sunshine as seen from Oving Hill.

The winner

The outright winner of the Autumn 2009 Guest Photographers Competition is this gorgeous picture by Paul that combines beautiful composition, great use of light and shade and an obliging horse.

How I chose the winner

I love all the guest photos, and they made me realise once again how much I like our village and the people in it.

I tried to choose the winner by a combination of my own thoughts, by asking friends and family and by reading your emails and comments.

All this led to small number of photos that were consistently identified as favourites, but I was still no further towards picking the outright winner.

So I asked Janet Gowin to do my dirty work for me. She confidently picked the winner, which was one of those favourites.
